While Maria may argue that International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) showcases the same go-tos year after year, I beg to differ. In 2014, there’s really no excuse for bad design, and this year’s vendors strongly support that theory. As displayed in nearly every post on this site, fashion, art, and design are constantly overlapping fields and they have a symbiotic relationship. Great design will fuel your social channels and having eye-catching content will not only keep your brand fresh but open up a world of possible collaborations. Here are some of the highlights from the 2014 ICFF show, running through Tuesday of this week at the Javits center.
A great example of living art in functional design, RAD is a Brooklyn based design company specializing in steel and wood tables, stools, and benches. All of the stools are two-legged, stackable, and come in a range of beautiful powder coats. Their Howard stool is a piece of perforated pop art and makes a great statement to a room or outdoor area.
Austin based accessories company, Finell is a modern silicone powerhouse. I was blown away by their display of glasses held on a silicone strapped tray on a wall and they definitely deserve the award for the coolest booth space of the show. Perfectly functional, with just the right amount of quirk, I think I see myself investing in their placemat sets that turn into a table runner in the near future.
Handcrafted wallpaper, with each piece screened individually on sustainably harvested paper, the process ensures that each roll will have the lowest impact on the environment. A newer brand out of Portland, Juju’s is not afraid of color and the bright pops of orange are something that would warm up any foyer, kid’s room, or creative space.
Another local brand represented at the show, this Gowanus duo is one that is taking the lighting world into the art space. I love AlexAllen’s attention grabbing candlesticks and pendant light, but most importantly, I love how everything in their collection is very reasonably priced.
It’s not too late to check out these brands and more at ICFF (Tuesday is open to the public!). You never know what may catch your eye, inspire your home design or permeate into other areas of your life from fashion to art, to even your choice of a restaurant. It’s always fun to take in these shows and see what creativity transpires.
