Bee-Shyuan Chang is a discerning editor and a gifted writer. Her articles, mostly featured in the New York Times Style Section, are concise and interesting, descriptive and witty and I never miss any of her features since she covers a broad range of topics from trends to fashion to beauty to the latest happenings in New York City (and beyond). Bee is pretty truthful to her Asian roots although she grew up in Seattle and has made New York her home for the past decade. I confess that, I was a little surprised about some of her art choices - a couple of her favorite artists were quite dark and complex -contrary to Bee's cheerful and lighthearted personality. But that is the beauty of loving and knowing art -- it is possible to always discover something deeper, a human layer that isn't so conspicuous at first glance. Here is what Bee told me about her obsessions:
Contemporary Artists You Are Obsessed About
Mickalene Thomas (2) her pieces practically ooze glamour.
Cy Twombly (3) the "hand" in his paintings is so obvious, deceptively simple at times, and always masterful.
Wu Guanzhong (4) Speaking of line, the paintings of this influential Chinese artist are breathtaking.
Francis Bacon (5) dark, twisted, morbidly gorgeous, however you describe his work, his paintings are always bursting with emotion.
Francesca Woodman (6) a career cut way too short, but haunting nonetheless.
Favorite Design/Furniture Designer
I lived and worked in Sao Paulo for a few months back in 2004 and fell head over heels for Sergio Rodrigues's (7) furniture. His designs are forward-thinking and modern yet always inviting.
City or place you'd like to go to escape
After a rough winter in New York, I've been daydreaming about the beach. On my list: island hopping in the Philippines (8). Heard the surf and beaches are divine.
Fashion item that's currently obsessing you
Chalk it up to getting older, but I've gotten more into fine jewelry and less into costume pieces. If money were no object, I'd snatch up a Thakoon for Tasaki pearl and diamond piece (9). I especially love the Danger collection, such as the ring and necklace, both in white gold.
