Melanie Dunea is a terrific artist, photographer, friend and author. Her life revolves around taking breathtaking portraits, trying the most absolutely fabulous restaurants around the world, writing a new column called "You Are What You Read" and producing spectacular books -of which she has authored five in diverse topics-, including the very successful "My Last Supper: 50 Great Chefs and Their Final Meals" and "My Last Supper: The Next Course: 50 More Great Chefs and Their Final Meals". Both books are sumptuous volumes where Melanie photographs and interviews some of the top chefs in the world. The most interesting question is, of course: the "What would you eat for your last meal on earth?”. Melanie could not have chosen better "obsessions" for this entry than her favorite art and objects -all in the context of the restaurant world-. Contemporary Artists that I'm Obsessed About:
I spend most of my time in restaurants, so my favorite art pieces are in some of the ones that I frequent the most in NYC:
1.Le Bernardin- "Deep Water No. 1" which is a 24-foot triptych painting of a stormy sea by Ran Ortner.
2.Eleven Madison Park - The 3 large oil paintings in the dining room are called, collectively, “New York City Nocturne for Jessie.” These works were painted by Stephen Hannock, the images taken from black and white photographs from the 1930s by Jessie Tarbox Beals. Jessie Tarbox Beals was one of the first women in the United States to have a career as a photojournalist. Her photographs of Madison Park were taken in the early 1900s. Each painting is oriented in a way to reflect a different view of Madison Square Park.
3.Costata- Oil and mixed media works on canvas by Nasser Azam.
4. Gramercy Tavern- Robert Kushner is the creator of the glorious mural that surrounds the tavern room.
6. Casa Lever - All the Warhols!
